It’s Summer!

It’s Summer!

Birds are returning, the ice is leaving, the first tentative flowers and leaves are boldly bursting out - summer is in the air! After a busy winter full of community visits, conferences, and training events we’re gearing up for summer family literacy activities.

We’ve pulled our Book Mobile out of the shed and pumped up the tires to get ready for our weekly visits to the Yellowknife Farmer's Market. Between June 6 and August 29 we’ll give away books at the market and host family-friendly activities.

Charlotte is preparing our plot at the Weledeh Community Garden. We hope to include the garden plot in a variety of NWT Literacy Council projects this summer. You may also see the Family Literacy team sharing fun, literacy-based activities at summer camps this year. I'm looking forward to trying out messy (but fun!) activities that we don't get to try inside the office, like bottle rockets (directions on page 80 of Science Fun). I've been waiting all winter to make one!

We’ll also be at the opening of the NorthWords Writers Festival, at the Canada Day Parade, and at Old Town Ramble and Ride.

In the meantime, we are packaging up a Story Walk kit for a regional library. We’re also happy to provide ideas and advice for your community events. We have lots of ideas in our Family and Community Literacy Resources and you can borrow Storysacks, Story Walk kits, and felt stories for use anywhere in the NWT.

Catch up with the NWT Literacy Council on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Post your photos and show us how you celebrate family literacy throughout the summer!
