30 years of great resources

“North Creative"

2020 marks 30 years since the NWT Literacy Council was created as an organization. We are so proud of the work that has been done over the last 30 years, and so thankful for the people who have contributed to the Council’s success. Throughout 2020, we will be celebrating the board, staff and community members who have been promoting literacy across the NWT for 30 years. We will also be sharing three decades full of memories.

Did you know that we have created over 200 resources since 1990? Some of those resources are available in all 11 Official Languages of the NWT. Our resources are downloaded all over the world and we have received requests for print copies from as far away as New Zealand. Here are some NWTLC staff members’ favourite resources:

  • Katie: I like the Environmental Print Games How-to-Kit. My kids are constantly pointing out environmental print and are proud of the “reading” they are doing. These games are a fun way to practise their environmental print recognition. Check out all of our How-to-Kits here
  • Charlotte: One of my favourite NWT Literacy Council resources is Storymakers. It’s a favourite of mine because of all the fun we had with it while celebrating Family Literacy Day in 2017. We made Story Maps, and Invisible Stories with different community groups. A special highlight was playing and making up stories with our Story Dice on live radio with CKLB and on CBC North’s Trail’s End.
  • Uma: The resources that I get requests for the most often are Career, Life, Work and the Everyday Math series. Check out these resources here

We want to know what your favourite resources have been over the years. What resource has been helpful in your classroom? Is there a family literacy resource that you like to use at home? Is there a resource that you love to tell others about? Let us know. Please email nwtliteracy@nwtliteracy.ca or call 867-873-9262 to tell us which resource you like and why.

NWT residents who contact us by February 28, 2020 will be entered in a draw for an NWTLC swag prize pack. We welcome entries from outside of the NWT but cannot ship the prize pack to you.
