The Project Specialist (Intern)-Family Literacy is responsible for developing and delivering training, developing resources, and providing support services to community organizations and other groups interested in family literacy. This is a term position from July 18, 2022 to July 17, 2023.

Candidates must have:

  • A recent post-secondary degree or diploma in education, early childhood education, community development or social sciences.
  • An understanding of community-based literacy programs around the NWT.
  • Some experience in working or volunteering with individuals, communities, and organizations to build and/or develop skills.
  • Experience working and/or living in a northern context.
  • Strong facilitation, consultation and team building skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and computer skills
  • The ability to travel, sometimes extensively.
  • Vaccination against COVID-19.
  • Driver’s license is an asset.

NWTLC is looking for two youth to join our team this summer. These positions are full time, 37.5 hours per week, for 12 weeks. Both positions are located in Yellowknife and based in an office setting. The positions will both require flexible working hours, with evening and weekend work required. Due to funding requirements, only youth aged 15-30 years old may be hired. Both positions are positions of trust and require a Criminal Record check with Vulnerable Sector check.

Early Childhood Assistant

The Early Childhood Assistant will promote literacy through various methods, including Facebook lives, social media and contests. The Early Childhood Assistant’s work will support the work of our Family Literacy Program.

The Early Childhood Assistant will represent the NWT Literacy Council and facilitate activities at community events. The Early Childhood Assistant may also help with the planning and promotion of these events. Events include:

  • Canadian Multiculturalism Day
  • Canada Day
  • Oldtown Ramble and Ride
  • Events in other communities, with the Bison Bus Mobile Family Literacy Center

The Early Childhood Assistant will create resources to support activities for events such as International Literacy Day, Family Literacy Day and NWT Literacy Week. The Early Childhood Assistant will help Family Literacy program staff to create early learning materials for use in Family Literacy programming. The Summer Literacy Assistant will also work with Family Literacy staff to create resources for the Bison Bus.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Interest and knowledge of literacy and learning
  • Effective time management and prioritizing
  • Knowledge of the north and Indigenous cultures
  • Must enjoy working with children and youth
  • Digital skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, social media and video conferencing

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry boxes of over 30 pounds
  • Riding an adult-size tricycle with books (our Book Mobile)
  • Driver’s license is an asset
  • There may be some travel within the NWT as part of the role

The Program Assistant will represent the NWT Literacy Council and facilitate activities at community events. The Program Assistant may also help with the planning and promotion of these events. Events include:

  • Canadian Multiculturalism Day
  • Canada Day
  • Oldtown Ramble and Ride
  • Events in other communities, with the Bison Bus Mobile Family Literacy Center
  • Recreation programming for the Community Connections program

The Program Assistant will create resources to support activities for events such as International Literacy Day, Family Literacy Day and NWT Literacy Week. The Program Assistant will help Family Literacy program staff to create early learning materials for use in Family Literacy programming. The Program Assistant will also work with Family Literacy staff to create resources for the Bison Bus.

The Program Assistant will assist staff in the Community Connections program for newcomers. This will include supporting programming such as outdoor recreation, cultural experiences, and community integration support. The Program Assistant may assist Community Connections staff with maintaining a community garden plot and creating learning materials for newcomer programming.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Interest and knowledge of literacy and learning
  • Effective time management and prioritizing
  • Knowledge of the north and Indigenous cultures
