Family Literacy Day coming up fast

National Family Literacy Day is quickly sneaking up on us.   If you’re in the same situation, you’ll be happy to find new resources up on our website to help you celebrate.

We produced a new booklet called, Children Need Play Every Day.  It’s a great handout and discussion tool for parents.

We also created a colourful family literacy infographic that talks about what family literacy is and why it’s important.  We hope you’ll share this with family, friends, work colleagues and perhaps even your Member of the Legislative Assembly.  It’s important that everyone realize the importance and long-term benefits of family literacy.

If you run family literacy activities in an NWT community, you can borrow some of the resources we have created.  We have a number of storysacks that we will lend to you free of charge.

We posted all of these resources on our Family Literacy Day event page.  You can also find lots more family literacy day ideas under Family and Community Resources.  Some of our family resources were translated into French.  On our Aboriginal languages resources page there are more family literacy resources in Aboriginal languages.

The theme of National Family Literacy Day is again “15 Minutes of Fun”.  Family literacy is about having fun learning together.  Family Literacy Day brings attention to a habit that we hope families will practice every day.  Even 15 minutes a day makes a difference.

Give us a call if you want printed resources.  We sent out almost 500 packages all across the NWT.  If we missed you, let us know and we’ll get a package in the mail right away.
