NWT Literacy Week: Literacy Around the NWT!

We are very excited to celebrate NWT Literacy week next month on May 1-7! Each year, NWT Literacy Week is an opportunity for us to highlight the importance of literacy for NWT residents. This is also a time to recognize ways that communities support literacy development and making literacy fun! This year we have chosen the theme of Literacy Around the NWT to celebrate the unique programs and hard-working facilitators all around the Territory.

Since the NWT Literacy Council (NWTLC) was formed in 1990, we have worked with community-based programs to support literacy activities. Those programs have evolved, and many have influenced the new resources and trainings we offer. During Literacy Week, we want to share the programs of our many partners across the Territory.

This year we want to highlight a different community-based program on our social media each day during NWT Literacy Week. Do you know of a unique literacy program in your community, such as a group that takes families out on the land to learn language and literacy together? Or a science program that families love? This could be an intergenerational learning program connecting Elders and youth, or a program for new Canadians to learn English. If you would like to celebrate your own program, or another program in your community, please email Katie at katie@nwtliteracy.ca.

We are also looking for learning activities you have used in your program or community that you would like to share with others. We will combine the activities into a resource that will be shared online, with credit given to the creator of the activity. If you would like to share an activity, please email Katie. Ideas include:

  • BINGO or other games in Indigenous languages
  • Numeracy activities through sewing or beading
  • Silly songs that get families laughing and learning
  • Adult learning activities from Community Learning Centres

We are providing funding for community groups to host an event during NWT Literacy Week. Groups can apply for up to $500 to help cover the costs of staff time, space or equipment rentals, food, prizes, supplies and other costs of the event. Please visit here for more information and to apply.

I wish you a happy NWT Literacy Week and look forward to sharing many great programs with you all!
